Twinsburg -- About 12 amateur chefs from the area went for gold in the first-ever Twinsburg Public Library Food Olympics Cooking Contest, conducted Aug. 20 at the library.

The gold medal went to Miguel Helfers, with his causa limea, or Peruvian potato salad.

Silver was awarded to Kathy Prorok for her Mexican flan; and the bronze medal went Madelon Alunni for her hummingbird cake, a banana-pineapple spice cake.

Celebrity chefs who judged the contest included Brandt Evans of Blue Canyon Kitchen and Tavern; Kathleen Reppl, the family and consumer science teacher at Twinsburg High School; and Paul Ackman, chef at Red's Place Catering.

Other dishes throughout the culinary tribute to the Rio Olympics included creme brulee and various types of pies and cakes.

About 45 people attended the afternoon, said Lori Holmes, organizer of the event and adult services librarian at Twinsburg Public Library.

"It was a really fun experience," she said.
