TWINSBURG -- Citing better visibility, Relay For Life of Twinsburg will move to Twinsburg Township Square for the 17th annual event, Aug. 12 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The event's move from Tiger Stadium to Twinsburg Township Square represents a complete makeover for the major fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
The "new" Relay For Life -- Twinsburg will be a festival/carnival-themed event and feature games and activities provided by the Relay For Life teams. Traditional events such as the luminaria ceremony, Miss Relay event and survivor celebrations will remain. New events include a survivor fashion show and a refreshed way of "walking the track."
"We're very excited for the new, family-friendly format," said Relay For Life co-chair Gabbi Santacesaria. "Our executive committee is expanding and our new team advocates developed a way for teams to meet fundraising goals without the stress of planning and executing large, pre-event fundraisers."
For the second year in a row, Relay will be co-chaired by three 17-year-old Twinsburg High School students, with Zoe Felber taking the lead and co-chairs Elana Felber and Gabbi Santacesaria assisting. "The Twinsburg City Schools and administration have been absolutely fundamental to the success of Relay For Life the past 16 years," Zoe Felber said. "Moving the event to the Square and to a mid-August date allows us to have more visibility. We want this to continue to be a signature Twinsburg event."
According to organizers, 2017 teams have already raised more than $6,200 through the snowball softball tournament, a chili cookoff and Twinsburg High School Relay spirit week. This year's fundraising goal is more than $30,000. Relay For Life of Twinsburg has raised $1.35 million since its inception in 2000.
Learn how to "get into the game" and form a Relay For Life Twinsburg team at the first information meeting, May 8 at 7 p.m. at The Edge Sports & Arts Academy, 9550 Ravenna Road in Twinsburg.
