Twinsburg -- Thinking of adopting a furry pet? Have a full house but want to help sick, injured, abused, neglected or abandoned animals?
PAWSibilities°, Humane Society of Greater Akron could use your help.
Due to a high volume of rescues between July 1 and Aug. 15, PHSGA is experiencing critical capacity at its Twinsburg facility.
PHSGA rescues Summit County's companion animals that are victims of cruelty, neglect, and abandonment as well as sick and injured strays. Since the beginning of July, PHSGA has rescued over 500 companion animals including cats, dogs, rabbits, Guinea pigs, ferrets, rats, mice, birds and hamsters.
The facility can house 350 animals comfortably, said President and CEO Diane Johnson.
"We have so many animals right now," she said. "In the summer months, we generally see donations go down due to family vacations and other things, but this makes it tough when we are rescuing over 500 animals at the same time.
In July alone, 332 animals were rescued.
Recently, humane officers rescued 13 cats and one bird found living in a hot, cramped hotel room with no food or water. These animals were added to the over 490 animals already calling the shelter a temporary home.
Besides the cramped quarters, the rescue is scrimping to care for the animals
"In the summer months, we generally see donations go down due to family vacations and other things, but this makes it tough when we are rescuing over 500 animals at the same time," Johnson said.
Monetary donations pay for shelter, food and vet care until the animals are placed in foster homes or adopted.
Donations can be made online at summithumane.org or mail to 7996 Darrow Road, Twinsburg, Ohio 44087.
