Twinsburg -- City planners have approved preliminary plans for an 89-room, 68,400-square-foot hotel on Wilcox Drive, a Residence Inn that would be built where the building that housed the old Damon's Grill and Sports Bar still sits.

However, plans for the hotel are on hold until the Board of Zoning Appeals can hear a variance request that would allow for a 5-story building off the Wilcox Drive cul-de-sac, zoned C-3 interchange business district.

The Hilton Garden Inn of Cleveland/Twinsburg, a 5-story facility, sits just to the north of the potential Residence Inn site in.

Planning Commission approved preliminary plans for the Residence Inn Aug. 1.

Larry Finch, Twinsburg's director of planning and community development, said the city has a 35-foot height limit on buildings unless an additional setback is provided via conditional use.

"The lot is not wide enough to accommodate an additional setback," Finch said Aug. 17.

The Board of Zoning Appeals is scheduled to meet Sept. 14.

"The BZA may consider the issue at its Sept. 14 meeting provided they receive an application from the [hotel's representative] by the first of the month," Finch said.

Finch said the hotel is proposed for 8941 Wilcox Drive, the former site of Damon's Grill and Sports Bar, which closed about five years ago when the franchise downsized, Finch said.

Daniel Sirk, Residence Inn project architect, said the Twinsburg plans call for 89 rooms, each a combination of one bedroom, studios and connector studios. All rooms will also have kitchenettes.

Plans also call for an indoor pool, fitness room and sports court, but no restaurant, Finch said.

"We're always happy to see investment in the city," Finch said. "I'm sure it will stimulate investment in other properties nearby, like the empty pizza shop building. It could eliminate vacant buildings in that area."

The hotel will employ about five people, each part-time.

The lack of an on-site restaurant at the Residence Inn could stimulate traffic at surrounding restaurants, Finch said.
