Twinsburg - The Twinsburg Police Association Shop with a Cop program is looking for volunteers and donations for this year's holiday event.
This is the fourth year Twinsburg police will participate in the nationwide program that started in the early 1990s.
"The program allows officers to spend some positive one-on-one time with Twinsburg children whose families are having financial problems or whose parents are serving in the U.S. Armed Forces and are deployed overseas," said program coordinator and Twinsburg police officer, Dan Fidoe.
An officer or other volunteer is paired with a child for a day of fun and Christmas shopping.
This year, shopping day is Dec. 10, starts with breakfast at Stow-Munroe Falls High School, and ends with lunch and gift wrapping at the Twinsburg Community Center.
In 2015 the program raised $5,000, which was used to take 39 kids shopping with 44 volunteers, including Twinsburg and Reminderville police officers and dispatchers, Fidoe said.
Each child is given a T-shirt, gift card, and a ride to Stow Walmart in a caravan of cop cars led by the SWAT command post van. Last year, each child spent $110.
Fidoe said there will be a raffle, to raise money, with tickets at $1 each. More information on the raffle will be released when the tickets are available.
Donations of any amount, or $100 to sponsor a child, are welcome, Fidoe said.
Paypal donations should be emailed to TwinsburgPoliceAssociation@yahoo.com. Checks can be mailed to the Twinsburg Police Association, Inc., 10075 Ravenna Road, Twinsburg, 44087.
The program is also taking applications from parents who would like their children to participate. The applications will be distributed by Twinsburg City Schools.
Children who will be ages 5 to 11 by Dec. 10, can apply if:
The child is eligible for the free lunch program at his or her school.
The child is available to shop on Dec. 10 at 7 a.m.
The child resides full time within the city of Twinsburg and does not live with a custodial parent outside the city limits.
