Muddy 'Snowball Softball' tourney raises $4,600 to fight cancer

SMASHlees beats Passin' Gas in championship

TWINSBURG -- The annual Snowball Softball Tournament, on Feb. 11 and organized by Relay For Life Team Livia's Leapers, was the most successful ever, raising more than $4,600 for the American Cancer Society.

In its 11th year, the fundraising tournament was at at the ballfields at R.B. Chamberlin Middle School and honors 19-year-old Olivia DePiore, who has been in remission from leukemia since 2006.

Players from eight teams battled the mud and slop in 45-degree weather, helping the event to surpass last year's totals.

Key sponsors included Night and Day Pediatrics; Mavis Winkle's; Instacopy Printing; and Felber PR and Marketing.

In the "Cancer Sucks Division," Instacopy and Passin' Gas finished with 2-1 records in the round robin format.

In a three-inning tie breaker, Passin' Gas got the win, 10-6, to advance to the championship. Remission Rules Division was represented by SMASHlees in the championship, after going undefeated in their round robin play. SMASHlees beat Passin' Gas, 10-8.

Food, beverages and raffles followed at Mavis Winkle's in Twinsburg.
