Summit County Assistant Prosecutor Jay Cole, a Democrat from Twinsburg Township, announced Jan. 5 that he has entered the race for judge in the Summit County Court of Common Pleas. He will vie for an open seat on the bench in the March 4 primary.

"Judges need to know the law, the rules of court, and how to apply them fairly," Cole said.

"I am that candidate, and if elected, I will serve the citizens of Summit County with distinction and honor."

Cole, 44, is a graduate of Ohio University and the Case Western Reserve University School of Law. He has been an attorney for 15 years, and an assistant prosecutor for more than 10 years. Prior to 2001, he was employed as an assistant city prosecutor with the city of Cleveland.

"I think that there's a need for good judges and people that want to do that job well," Cole said.

There are currently eight judges in the county court's general division. Last year, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled that the Summit County court could take on two more judges beginning in 2008, bringing the total to 10 judges in the general division.
