Kol Chadash celebrates Israel's 60th birthday

Shimon Smith, a Jewish musician and educator, is coming to Cleveland April 18 and 19 to help Congregation Kol Chadash celebrate Passover and the 60th anniversary since the founding of the state of Israel. Smith has traveled extensively throughout Israel and the United States, performing contemporary Israeli music.

He will lead a family education program at the congregation, which is located at 6545 SOM Center Road in Solon, on April 17 beginning at 6 p.m. The program will explore the various groups of Jews who have found freedom from persecution in the Jewish state during the last 60 years through a game. The program will introduce the foods, culture, customs and traditions of groups such as Soviet and Ethiopian Jews who have found freedom in the modern state of Israel.

The second part of this program will be April 18 and will begin at 6 p.m. with a Shabbat dinner of Israeli foods, followed by a service which celebrates Israel's music. Following the service Smith will lead a Shabbat song session highlighting contemporary and traditional Israeli music. This program is being funded by an "Israel at 60" grant from the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland. RSVP for either program to Elaine Cole at 330-425-8545.

Kol Chadash and Signature

Congregation Kol Chadash of Solon also will host an annual second night of Passover Seder at Signature of Solon located at 39000 Signature Drive in Solon on April 20 at 6 p.m.

In addition, plague bags and treats will be provided for the children.

The Seder is open to the community. The cost is $36 for adults and children older than 12 years, $15 for children 5 to 12 years, and no charge for children under 5 years.

Reservations are necessary. Call Jacquelyn Frederick at 440-248-5979 for information or to register.
