Grammy Award winner Garrick Ohlsson will close Tuesday Musical Association's extraordinary 120th anniversary season on May 6 at 7:30 p.m. at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall on the University of Akron campus.

Ohlsson will give this year's Margaret Baxtresser Annual Piano concert with a program featuring works by Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, Joio, and Chopin.

A student of the late Claudio Arrau, Ohlsson has come to be noted for his masterly performances of the works of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, as well as the Romantic repertoire. His concerto repertoire alone is unusually wide and eclectic -- ranging from Haydn and Mozart to works of the 21st century.

In addition to his performance in Akron, Ohlsson' s 2007-2008 season includes appearances in North America with the symphony orchestras of Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Fort Worth, Houston, Indianapolis, Minnesota, Nashville, San Francisco, Seattle, and Toronto.

Ohlsson began his piano studies at the age of 8. He attended the Westchester Conservatory of Music and at 13 entered The Juilliard School in New York City. In addition to winning the Gold Medal in the Chopin Competition, Mr. Ohlsson has won First Prizes at the 1966 Busoni Competition in Italy, the Avery Fisher Prize in 1994 and the 1998 University Musical Society Distinguished Artist Award in Ann Arbor, Mich. He makes his home in San Francisco.

Curtain time for the performance is 7:30 p.m.

Ticket prices range from $22 to $35, and can be purchased by calling the E.J. Thomas ticket office at 330-972-7570 Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Students can attend any Tuesday Musical concert at no cost. They need a ticket voucher from their teacher or they can pick one up at the student ticket table in the ticket office lobby of E.J. Thomas Hall on the afternoon or evening of a concert. The voucher is redeemed for a concert ticket at the student ticket table.
