by Eric Marotta News Leader Editor Brecksville -- The National Park Service has announced the Cuyahoga Valley National Park will receive $7.8 million in federal funds to pay for maintenance that had been put off in the park. "We are very pleased to have our projects selected as a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act," said park Superintendent John P. Debo Jr. "This funding will enable the park to address safety concerns, improve visitor services and protect valuable resources." The funding will help pay for the current $43 million in deferred maintenance in the 33,000-acre park located in northern Summit and southeastern Cuyahoga counties, the park service announced. The projects include closing four hazardous, abandoned oil and gas wells in Valley View and Boston Township and eliminating failing septic systems in the village of Everett, which houses a ranger station, a library, a park office and housing for park interns. The funding will also pay for work on the historic Tinker's Creek aqueduct in Independence and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. Park spokesperson Mary Pat Doorley said maintenance to the 26-mile railroad will include welding about 9 miles of rails that are bolted together, and the replacement of about 3,200 rail ties. She said work on the aqueduct is the second phase of plans for the overall renovation of the structure. In addition to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, federal parks in other parts of Ohio have also been targeted for stimulus funding. The Associated Press reports about $7.6 million will go to Perry's Victory and International Peace memorial on South Bass Island. The monument honors those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. Park Superintendent Blanca Stransky says work on the observation deck and elevator at the Perry monument will begin when it closes for the season in August. Elsewhere, the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park in Chillicothe will get $2 million for a new facility to house prehistoric pottery and other artifacts.
