Twinsburg athletic director Mike Silverthorn, 37, says he loves the high school and enjoys working there.

He'll just be doing it from a different desk this fall.

Silverthorn will switch from being assistant principal/athletic director to being exclusively an assistant principal for the 2009-10 school year.

His salary will not change, Twinsburg assistant superintendent Mike Lenzo said. Pending Board of Education approval, Silverthorn will make $92,446 this upcoming school year, which is the amount specified in his new three-year contract ratified earlier this year.

Twinsburg superintendent Steve Marlow said Silverthorn's move likely would be ratified at the June 24 Board of Education meeting.

The change will leave an opening for an athletic director at the high school. Marlow said a search for a replacement will begin after the June 24 Board meeting.

"It's something that I thought about for a while," Silverthorn said June 22. "I just got a new three-year contract. I was obviously enjoying my job as athletic director."

Marlow noted Silverthorn will take over the position from which former assistant principal Louise Teringo resigned earlier this month.

Silverthorn said, though he has been listed as an assistant principal, he has primarily focused on athletic issues in his current position.

In his new assistant principal's job, Silverthorn said his primary duty will be dealing with student discipline and he also expects to take an active role in the district's curriculum development.

"I've been an [athletic director] for seven years," Silverthorn said. "I have aspirations to do different things in my career. I think I had to make this move if I wanted to get to where I wanted. In the future, I have aspirations to someday be a school principal and ultimately, move on to a central office job."

Silverthorn has been the athletic director for at Twinsburg for two years, taking over for Bill Schumacher in 2007, who now is athletic director in Chagrin Falls. Prior to his arrival in Twinsburg, Silverthorn had been athletic director in Alliance for five years.

The Stark County resident said he wants to stay in the district, regardless of his position.

"When I chose to come to Twinsburg, I did my homework," Silverthorn. "It was a place that I wanted to be. I just love working with the people [there]. I'm comfortable where I'm at right now."

Silverthorn said he spoke with his family about the move and noted he hoped it would allow him to spend more time with his two daughters.

"As an assistant principal, I think I'll have a bit more structured time between the time devoted to school and the time devoted to my family," Silverthorn said.

Silverthorn said he did not recommend anyone for the athletic director's position, but hoped that assistant athletic director Alex Popovich would "get a shot at it."

"I have a good relationship with Alex and I think he'd do a good job," Silverthorn said.
