Twinsburg -- A bit of a break and a pair of home games is just what the Twinsburg girls basketball team needed after a long, successful trip to Berlin for the Classic in the Country.

The Lady Tigers posted a 62-48 home win over a solid Brunswick unit on Jan. 23.

Twinsburg, 13-1 overall, will play Jan. 30 against visiting Elyria.

Despite senior guard-forward Jenn Mohney still recovering from a concussion at the CITC, the short handed Tigers showed plenty of balance and defense over the Blue Devils (9-5).

With six athletes scoring six or more points, Twinsburg had too much firepower for Brunswick, which was held to just 22 first half points.

Sophomore center Malina Howard made her presence felt in the paint as she scored 14 points as did speedy freshman Ashley Morrissette. The first-year guard buried three triples in the win. Howard grabbed six rebounds.

Senior forward Hilary Southworth netted 10 points and played solid defense while sophomore Leah Fechko also tossed in 10, including one trey. Both played tremendous for head coach Julie Solis.

Junior forward Nicole Carman put in eight points while sophomore Lashawna Gatewood added some energy with six points.

Junior point guard Katie Fox dominated on the defensive end and had several assists for the Lady Tigers, who scored well against one of the better defensive clubs in the Northeast Ohio Conference.

Twinsburg did a solid job defensively on Mikaela Lengal, an All-Ohio wing player. Lengal was held to just four field goals and had 20 points as she hit 12 free throws.

Lengal, much like Mohney, had suffered a recent head injury against GlenOak.

The Lady Tigers, who forced some quick shots against the Blue Devils, committed 22 fouls and it led to some foul trouble. Brunswick had some opportunities at the free throw line and canned 25 charity tosses.

Both Maxpreps and Calpreps, large high school publications, have Twinsburg ranked as number one in Ohio in division I. Twinsburg is also ranked 44th in the nation by Maxpreps.

In Ohio's Associated Press Division I rankings, Twinsburg moved up to fifth, ahead of Toledo Waite (11-1).

Pickerington North (12-1) is atop the poll, followed by Upper Arlington (12-0), Toledo Start (11-2), Dresden Tri-Valley (13-0), and Twinsburg, who received three first place votes.
