Wanted: Twinsburg High School students interested in the Tiger's ice hockey team. Players can get plenty of ice time and practice sessions.

Tiger head coach Bruce Hazelden is interested in student-athletes who have an interest in ice hockey.

"I will be offering ice/practice time for anyone wanting to play for the Twinsburg High School team in late February," said Hazelden, who has coached Twinsburg to an solid season at 6-9 overall.

Hazelden wants to build the program from the youth level and has been excited about this winter's progress with the program, which is in its early stages.

On Jan. 17, Twinsburg showed off that youth in a positive fashion in a non-league game against a youthful Youngstown Ursuline-Cardinal Mooney team at Garfield.

With three eighth-grade players making their debut, the Tigers posted a 9-7 win. Twinsburg doesn't have a single senior on the roster.

Dillon Aoki played his first game and had an assist while Hunter Coleman played his first game as well as Addison Collins, who had two goals and two assists.

"We are trying to get interest in the program and it was pretty exciting to have three Twinsburg eighth graders play with us," said the mentor. "Everyone played well."

Coupled with the very young Ursuline-Mooney combined team, Twinsburg had some players out of action for various reasons. It was a perfect time for the youth movement.

Jesse Black volunteered to fill the void at goalie. He faced 26 shots and saved 19. Black is a first year junior.

"Jesse did a great job in net," said Hazelden. "He saved 19 and made the tough transition from player to goalie look natural."

Freshman standout Brandon Best had five points as he netted four goals and an assist. Best is having a brilliant season on the ice.

John Safier broke out of a slump with two goals and three feeds for a season-high five points. "Steve Stoneman (three assists) and John were big playmakers for us."

Luke Stewart scored a goal and had two assists while Anthony Morelli added an assist.

The Tigers also feature two hard-working females on the team in September Cart and Hannah Stewart.

"We try to use the girls for one (player) shift for each period," said Hazelden. "They have done well. The kids are progressing so well."

On Feb. 18, the Twinsburg Dairy Queen will have a portion of its sales from 5 to 8 p.m. donated to the ice hockey program.

Any interested students wanting to play ice hockey, please contact Bruce Hazelden at 330-348-9403.
