Twinsburg -- The city has a list of streets set for a makeover this summer, according to City Engineer Amy Mohr.

By mid-May, Karvo Paving, a Cuyahoga Falls-based contractor, will begin resurfacing the roads for $730,000, which Council unanimously approved in April, Mohr said.

According to Deputy Finance Director Michelle Bowens, the city will pay for the road maintenance project with money collected from vehicle registration fees and city taxes.

Enterprise Parkway, Case Parkway, Merriam Lane and Hermitage Drive are some of the major roads which will be resurfaced this summer, according to Mohr.

The contractor will also make various repairs to Aurora Road, Cannon Road and Post Road, such as asphalt patching, Mohr said.

Twinsburg Fitness Center's 12,000-square-foot parking lot will be resurfaced as well and have its parking spaces repainted, Mohr said.

Mohr said the first step of establishing road projects is the city engineering department visiting the city roads throughout the year for inspection for damage, such as cracking.

Sometimes the engineering department looks at a specific road because of a public complaint, Mohr said, noting Hermitage Drive was inspected because of a resident's complaint.

The engineering department makes a list of the recommended roads for repair and sends it to the capital improvement board and the mayor for review. Both parties then send their recommendations to Council for approval.

Councilor Bill Hon said he is going to make a recommendation to the capital improvement board for Haverhill Road and Warren Parkway to be resurfaced.

"Haverhill and Warren Parkway have deep cracks and are sinking," Hon said, noting he feels the roads should have been repaired this year.

But, Hon said he feels the 2008 road maintenance program is "OK."

"It is a good maintenance program," Mohr said. "We have over 96 miles of roadway in Twinsburg, so we have to do maintenance every year."

According to Mohr, the number of roads requiring repairs has not increased over the years, but the cost has, due to higher prices for materials.

"The cost of gas, steel and asphalt has gone up," Mohr said. "But the longer you wait [to repair a road] the more you have to put into them."

Mohr estimated Karvo Paving will finish the road maintenance program in August.
