The Nancy G. Brinker Collection of Hungarian Art- Works of Passion, Interludes and Progress

In 2001, while Ambassador to Hungary, The Honorable Nancy G. Brinker began collecting and developed a passion for Hungarian art which grew into this collection. As founder of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Ambassador Brinker decided to share this artwork with communities around the country, tying in with local affiliates' Art for the Cure events. After a debut in Brinker's home town, Cleveland, with its large Hungarian population and roots, is the first venue.
Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race

From 1933 to 1945, Nazi Germany's government, led by Adolph Hitler, promoted a nationalism that combined territorial expansion with claims of biological superiority " an "Aryan master race". Legitimized by prominent scientists, eugenics became a platform to cleanse German society of individuals viewed as threats to the "health' of the nation. This chilling exhibit from the United States Holocaust Museum was seen recently at The Warhol in Pittsburgh. Cleveland's medical presence will be showcased through related programs that debate some of today's most pressing medical moral issues.

Noted urban historian, John J. Grabowski, hosts a lively talk and slide presentation focusing on the Jewish roots of Cleveland's Glenville neighborhood. Learn more about why this community is the birthplace of Superman, sports heroes and intellectual giants. Dr. Grabowski holds a joint appointment with the Department of History at CWRU and the Western Reserve Historical Society, where he serves as Director of Research.

Summer is over. But just when everybody else is bringing in their picnic tables, Jewish people go out into the brisk fall air to eat and celebrate the harvest festival of Sukkot. Explore the Beachwood City Park with special guest Mary Rouse Martin, Education Director of the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes and learn how creatures big and small create homes for themselves in nature. Then, enjoy fall fruits in a real sukkah (festive harvest booth), create your own sukkah decorations, and carve a mini-pumpkin with your family.

Think it couldn't happen here? In the early years of the 20th century, authorities were obsessed with the belief that the "racial stock" of America was in decline. By the 1930s eugenic sterilization laws gave states the right to forcibly sterilize citizens they deemed "unfit" to reproduce. This haunting film tells the story of the Lynchburg Colony in Virginia, where between 1927 and 1972, over 8,000 children and young teenagers were forcibly sterilized.

Driven by a racist ideology legitimized by German scientists, the Nazis attempted to eliminate all of Europe's Jews and other "inferior" races as well as to cleanse German society of individuals viewed as threats to the "health of the nation." Dr. Peter Haas, Abba Hillel Silver, Professor of Jewish Studies and Director of the Samuel Rosenthal Center for Judaic Studies at Case Western Reserve University, attempts to answer the question "How did medicine go so wrong?"

Opened in 2005, The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage joins an elite group of world-class institutions as a living testament to the courage, conviction and achievements of Cleveland's Jewish community. The stories of individuals and families " past and present " come to life through state-of-the-art exhibitions, interactives and films, oral histories, photographs and artifacts. The Museum includes The Temple-Tifereth Israel Gallery, an internationally-recognized collection of Judaica, and a special exhibition gallery featuring important exhibitions of national and international acclaim.
The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage is a partnership of The Maltz Family Foundation, the Jewish Community Federation's Centennial Initiative and The Temple-Tifereth Israel with research support from the Western Reserve Historical Society.
