Twinsburg girls remain unbeaten

One successful holiday basketball event down, and one more to go for the 10-0 Twinsburg girls team that went 2-0 its own second annual Fight or Flight Invitational.

The Tigers were not challenged at the two-day, 10-team event on Dec. 22-23.

On Dec. 23, senior guard Ashley Morrissette scored 17 points and dished out 13 assists as Twinsburg easily defeated Toledo Rogers (7-2) by a score of 69-45. That came after the Tigers won 63-33 over Middleburg Heights Midpark (6-2) on Dec. 22.

Twinsburg started the game against Rogers with an incredible 17-0 run to start the game.

"It was a big win over a good team," said head coach Julie Solis.

Solis raved over her senior guards Brooke Smith and Morrissette.

Smith scored 18 points behind her superb quickness plus she added seven rebounds, and two steals. Morrissette added five rebounds to her standout game.

Both Smith and Morrissette also buried two three-pointers while sophomore guard Aloneet Durden had one..

After leading the Tigers against the Rams' 1-2-2 half court zone defense with strong passing in the first half, the athletic duo used their speed to run in transition in the second half which also opened up the Tigers" perimeter game with five triples overall.

"It was good to see everyone hit from outside and we have been seeing more zones this year," said Solis. "Ashley had a great game and our guards were very good."

Rogers offered little resistance early on defensively and the Tigers took advantage.

Senior center Char-dell Dunnigan contributed nine points and six rebounds while senior post Mercedes Hobbs netted eight points off of the bench. Junior wing Baleigh Reid added eight points and three thefts.

Durden added five points and five caroms while junior forward Marisa Howard had four points and five boards off the bench.

"I was really happy how our point distribution in the post was balanced plus with how we shared the ball," said Solis.

Twinsburg will also play in the 18th annual Motor City Roundball Classic at Detroit Country Day High in Beverly Hills, MI.

In its first game, Twinsburg plays Dec. 28 against Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy (7:20). On Dec. 29, the Tigers play Goodrich High at 5:40 p.m.

In the win over Midpark, Twinsburg held the Meteors to just five buckets in the first half.

Twinsburg dominated except for giving up some offensive rebounds (six in the first quarter and 14 overall) and some sloppy play in the second half (11 of the team's 14 turnovers).

Morrissette scored 15 points, handed out five assists, and had five steals while Reid poured in 14 points with four thefts.

Howard scored a career-high 11 points and also had four boards and two steals off of the bench.

"Marisa has played very well," said her coach. "She gives us positive energy and she finishes well."

Smith added seven points, five boards, and four assists. Hobbs had six points while Durden scored four points and had a career-high seven rebounds.

Dunnigan added four points while sophomore post Jaime Sanborn sparked the team with extended minutes off the bench.
