The improving Twinsburg ice hockey team had a battle against Western Reserve Academy that resulted in a 5-5 tie on Jan. 20 at the Dan Kostel Arena in Garfield Heights.

It was a fiery comeback by the visiting private-school Pioneers.

With just 44 seconds remaining in the game, Rob Markwell scored his third goal of the night and the hat trick tally cut the Tiger lead to 5-4.

Then, WRA's Dustin Rand scored for the Pioneers with three seconds left. It sent the game into overtime.

The overtime period was scoreless as the game ended at a 5-5 tie. The Tigers had 47 shots on the Pioneer nets while Twinsburg junior goaltender Braden Susnik stopped 26 of the 31 shots he faced.

It was a tough non-division draw for the Tigers, who are in fight with Chesterland West Geauga for the lead in the Blue Central West Division of the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League.

First period action started well for Twinsburg when junior defenseman Andrew Leonard pitched a shot into the back of the net just four minutes into the contest off assists from senior defenseman Brandon Best and junior forward Brennan Byers.

Best made it 2-0 with 1:00 left in the period off a feed from Byers.

WRA got on the board 5:00 into the next period on a score by Otto Bohan. Markwell tallied another score just 30 seconds later to tie the game, but the Tigers got the equalizer just 4:00 later when Best slammed home a goal on assists from Byers and sophomore forward Kyle DiRosa.

The Pioneers closed out the scoring for the period when Markwell found the back of the Tiger net at the 2:19 mark, and the period ended with the teams tied 3-3.

DiRosa notched a goal on the board in the third stanza, unassisted, at the 8:44 mark. This was followed less than a minute later by Leonard who slid the puck into the Pioneer net on an assist from junior forward Dylan Aoki.

Twinsburg beat Canfield 8-0 on Jan. 16 at the Ice Zone in Boardman as Best had a career game with three goals and three assists. The Tigers had a whopping 49 shots on goal.

Susnik was outstanding as he notched up his third league play shutout of the season by kicking aside the six shots he faced.

Freshman defenseman Travis Zochowski and DiRosa each had a goal and two assists.

Senior forward Eddie Govang had a goal along with senior defenseman Mike Peelman while Aoki added a goal and an assist. Junior forward Hunter Coleman also was credited with an assist.

In upcoming action, Twinsburg takes on Nordonia Jan. 27 at the Gilmour Ice Arena at 7:10 p.m.

Many local arenas are preparing to start Learn to Skate and Learn to Play Hockey programs early this spring.
