Defense wins games in girls soccer and Twinsburg continues to excel on the defensive end as the Tigers earned the second seed for sectional play.

First-year head coach John Garber saw his troops secure its fourth straight shutout in a 2-0 non-league victory at Solon Oct. 8. Twinsburg also earned a 5-0 win at home over Nordonia Oct. 5.

Twinsburg, 8-4-2 overall, has played sensational defense against a quality schedule this fall.

Regular season wins over Hudson, Stow-Munroe Falls, and Nordonia enabled the Tigers to garner the second seed in the upcoming Kent Roosevelt Division I sectional-district tournament.

Powerful Walsh Jesuit, which beat the Tigers earlier in the season in non-league action, gained the top seed at the Kent tourney draw.

Twinsburg was seeded second overall in front of Hudson and Stow.

Garber earned a first-round sectional bye and will host a sectional final Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. against the first-round winner between Stow and Kent. Stow (7-1-5) is expected to survive that first round test.

"Our defense has been tremendous and we had a really good win at Solon, which is a quality opponent," said Garber. "I was pleased with the draw and defense has been a big part of our success."

"I felt good about the draw," he added. "Walsh deserved the top spot and its an extremely competitive district."

After seeing some action a year ago, junior goalkeeper Ally Zenda has been sensational this fall, but she has had plenty of help on the back line.

"Ally has done a great job and our defense has had [plenty of contributors," said the mentor.

Senior Maria Kormanec, senior Abby Zona, junior Christina Bais, and freshman Amy Howersaat are the back-line starters on defense.

Among the subs on defense who have helped include junior Gabby Diturno, senior Kali Benedict, junior Bella Perrin, and junior Abby Rathers.

Freshman striker-midfielder Alli King scored the first goal at Solon on a feed from junior midfielder Blair Harney.

Junior striker Alyssa Troyer got the second tally for the Tigers on an assist from sophomore midfielder-striker McKenna Donahue.

Twinsburg was set to travel to Cuyahoga Falls Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. before finishing the regular season Oct. 15 by hosting Massillon Jackson Oct. 15. 7 p.m.
