Twinsburg gymnastics coach M'Caul Layman knows her team faces an uphill battle every time it steps on the mat.

With state powers like Brecksville-Broadview Heights and Hudson in its backyard and the Suburban League ranking as one of the toughest gymnastics conferences in the state, Layman knows she just has to concentrate on what her team can do.

In that regard, there's already been progress this year for Tiger gymnastics.

"Last year, we were scoring between 110 and 115 as a team," Layman said. "This year, we're already at 117. We've got more girls on the team. We want to at least improve on last year."

Despite not having its full team available, Twinsburg did show improvement as part of a six-team meet at Gym World in Twinsburg Dec. 27. While Gym World is the Tigers' home gym, North Royalton served as host.

Twinsburg ended up fourth in the meet with a team score of 117.45 points, beating the likes of Padua Franciscan (91 points) and Solon (89.2).

Brecksville won the team competition with 138.85 points, followed by Stow-Munroe Falls (133.4) and North Royalton (120.15).

"They did pretty good tonight," Layman said. "Some girls are on vacation. We know we've got a lot of work to do."

Twinsburg had its rotation on the vault, as it finished third on the apparatus with 31.7 points. The Tigers were fourth at the meet on uneven bars (26.45), balance beam (29.95) and floor exercise (29.35).

Individually, Twinsburg's top finishers was Peyton Sesny, who earned eighth place in the all-around with a score of 33 points. Brecksville's Emily Huffman won the individual all-around with a score of 35.8.

Twinsburg's Makenzie Hartmann finished 16th in the all-around with a score of 29.35 points. Hartmann scored a 7.6 on vault, a 6.3 on uneven bars, a 7.45 on balance beam and an 8.0 on floor exercise.

Also competing in the all-around for Twinsburg were Jenna Post (20th, 26.25), Brett Grosell (22nd, 21.95) and Mikayla Cain (26th, 19.2).

Twinsburg had Isabel Bongiovanni compete on vault (7.25) and floor exercise (6.2), while Syndey White also competed on the vault (7.1) and floor (5.9).

Twinsburg will host a quad meet at Gym World Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. with Stow, Solon and Hudson.
