A resilient Twinsburg High softball squad battled in a sectional final against Youngstown Boardman before falling 3-2 in a heartbreaking season-ending loss.
Head coach Chris Shaffer saw his six-seeded club lose 3-2 to third seeded Boardman May 10 in Boardman in the sectional championship game.
Twinsburg, which had a win in the first round of the Solon Division I sectional-district tournament over Maple Heights, gave up three runs in the bottom of the third inning to the Lady Spartans.
The third inning rally broke open a 0-0 game and gave the edge for Boardman (12-6).
Canfield was the top seed, followed by Aurora, Boardman, Nordonia, Solon, and Twinsburg.
Boardman's Lauren Gabriele stung Twinsburg with her bat.
Gabriele went 2 for 3 with a home run and a double. She had two RBIs with Vanessa Roush having the other RBI.
Twinsburg showed resilience and battled back, plating a run in the top of the fourth frame and one more in the top of the sixth inning to make it 3-2. The Lady Tigers couldn't push across the tying run in the seventh.
The Tigers had trouble generating offense against Spartan hurler Ashley Cornelius, who fired a complete game 5-hitter with seven strikeouts.
Cornelius will continue her softball career at Grove City College. Gabriele, a two-time first-team all-league player, will play basketball at the University of Mount Union.
Twinsburg only allowed five hits in the game and played errorless softball.
